Pickler Companies' partnership with Maui United Way (MUW) grew out of a long-standing relationship between David Pickler and Luke Bailey. This connection laid the foundation for our collaboration with MUW, which significantly grew as we provided vital financial management and support during the Maui wildfires in August 2023. Our efforts reflect a commitment to philanthropy and community service, aiming to create lasting positive change in Maui County.

MAUI UNITED WAY

Our partnership with Maui United Way (MUW) has its roots in a long-standing relationship between David Pickler and Luke Bailey. This relationship began when Luke, as a teenager, sought investment advice from David. Over the years, David has continued to advise Luke, extending his expertise to Luke’s parents and siblings as well.

When our relationship with MUW started, Luke, along with his wife and children, was living on Maui. At no charge, we developed an investment policy statement and provided structure for MUW to hire an investment advisor. We were then asked to apply for this role, and ultimately our proposal was accepted. Our involvement with MUW grew significantly after the devastating fires hit Maui on August 8th, 2023, leading our firms to not only manage finances but also engage deeply in broader support efforts.

Our Contributions to Maui United Way
We have played an active role in helping Maui United Way achieve their mission of serving and making an impactful difference in the Maui County community. We provide ongoing investment services, including managing their vastly increased endowment. Our legal team advises MUW on policies, procedures, compliance, risk management, and contract issues. Additionally, Pickler Accounting Advisors acts as the contract comptroller for MUW, assisting in cleaning up their books and handling day-to-day accounting responsibilities and monthly financial reporting.

Workshops and Strategic Support in Maui
From 2022 to the present, our team has visited Maui multiple times, conducting workshops to empower MUW's staff and board members. David led a strategic planning session, Cameron Spann delivered an insightful segment on branding, and our team provided broad guidance on legal and regulatory compliance. These sessions equipped MUW with the tools and knowledge necessary to enhance their community impact.

Maui Wildfires
In early August 2023, wildfires devastated Maui, resulting in extensive damage and the loss of over 100 lives. During this crisis, our involvement intensified as we facilitated stock donations from individuals, ensuring that the funds were efficiently directed to support relief efforts. We coordinated the receipt and distribution of millions of dollars, providing administrative, transactional, and investment guidance to over 8,000 individuals affected by the wildfires. Our commitment extended beyond financial services, providing holistic support to the Maui community during this challenging time.

Our Ongoing Relationship
Today, we continue to strive to make a positive impact in Maui County by supporting Maui United Way in various ways. Our financial advisory services will be key to MUW's financial sustainability. We expect our accounting firm's role to shift from urgent assistance to a more traditional bookkeeping relationship, and we will continue to offer any guidance requested of us to facilitate MUW's lasting status as a trusted partner for all in Maui County.
