Gerry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1975, a year after graduating from Norman High School and spending a semester at the University of Oklahoma. After completing boot camp, he was assigned to Aviation Electrician’s Mate School in Millington, TN. Following graduation, he received orders to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, where he served with VAQ-134, working on the EA-6B, the Navy's electronic warfare aircraft. During his four years of service, Gerry completed two nine-month Pacific deployments on the USS Enterprise (CVN 65). On his second deployment, he served as the Electric Shop's Flight Deck Troubleshooter for his squadron, working on the flight deck of the Navy’s largest aircraft carrier at the time—a highlight of his enlistment.
